$27.5M Thomson Reuters Clear privacy class action settlement

Share
A $27.5 million class action settlement resolves claims that Thomson Reuters’ Clear product exposed the personal information of California residents.
The Clear settlement includes all persons who, between Dec. 3, 2016, and Oct. 31, 2024, resided in California and whose information Thomson Reuters made available through the Clear product.
Consumers in the Thomson Reuters class action lawsuit claimed the company made their personal information available for sale via Clear. Thomson Reuters allegedly violated Californians’ privacy rights by selling access to their personal information without their consent.
Thomson Reuters is an AI and technology company that sells many products, including Clear, its public records technology tool.
Under the terms of the Clear settlement, class members can receive an equal share of the net settlement fund. Exact payments will vary depending on the number of claims filed, but estimates suggest each claimant may receive between $19 and $48.
In addition to providing monetary compensation, Thomson Reuters agreed to change some of its practices in operating Clear, including enhancing its opt-out procedure for Californians, making more information about Clear available to Californians and changing Clear’s settings and Thomson Reuters’ practices in managing Clear.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is Dec. 6, 2024.
The final approval hearing for the Thomson Reuters class action lawsuit settlement is scheduled for Feb. 13, 2025.
The claim form deadline is Dec. 6, 2024.
